What to Expect Before, During, and After an FAA Aviation Medical Exam

Whether you’re exploring a career as a commercial pilot or dreaming of obtaining your private license, the first step of becoming a pilot is obtaining your FAA Medical Certificate. Below is a simple guide with what you’ll need to know before, during and after you pass your exam—whether you're applying for a First-Class, Second-Class, or Third-Class medical certificate.
01.

Preparing for Your Exam

Before your appointment, you’ll need to complete your online MedXPress Application. This web application securely transmits completed forms to your AME to review with you during your medical examination. All pilots need to log in is a valid email address!
02.

Schedule Appointment

The next step to certification is planning your examination. You can do this by booking online or by calling us. We ask that all pilots bring a government-issued ID, your MedXPress confirmation number (the printed sheet listed in the step before), and any relevant medical records to their scheduled appointment.
03.

During Your Exam

At ChetMD, we pride ourselves in creating a personalized approach to your care. An examination with Chet typically takes about 30 minutes to complete and includes all necessary testing for certification.
04.

After Your Exam

Chet will review your information and will either approve, defer or deny certification. But no need to worry! In the unlikely chance we experience issues meeting medical standards, you’ll work with Chet on a personalized care approach and may still be eligible for a special issuance depending on your condition.
